NS - I wouldn't know who is in the Hot Rods now to be honest. In the early days I got to know a few of them from following them around and a little bit later on when Dave Higgs ran a rehearsal studio on the Rock. Southend had a great scene in the 70's and everyone knew everyone and the bands swapped members constantly.

Parents bought me records by The Beatles, Stones, Ronettes, Crystals, Beach Boys, Byrds, Love etc. A Mod cousin bought Yardbirds, Georgie Fame, John Mayall and early Bluebeat label stuff. By age of 11 I was into Black Sabbath, original Thin Lizzy, Groundhogs along with Motown and Reggae seeing as I was a little oik Skinhead. Then got into MC5, Stooges, Edgar Broughton, Pink Fairies, Hawkwind, Roxy Music, Can, Neu, Faust which later merged with following early Dr Feelgood and Eddie & the Hot Rods around then became a massive The Jam fan from very early on, then followed The Ruts, Madness and Specials around in early days all before hitting age of 20.......and still listen to most of it now.

Being a teenager in the 80s, hitting adulthood towards the latter part of the decade:
First proper gig was Butthole Surfers + Primal Scream at the Brixton Academy
Also into a lot of other American guitar "noise" bands, e.g. Sonic Youth. Was at the first UK gigs by Mudhoney and Nirvana.
I fucking hated most of the charts post-86 or thereabouts.
Also was into The Fall and the likes of Birthday Party and Throbbing Gristle (though both had split by the time I discovered them)
And by and large my music tastes have gotten older over the years, discovering bands from further back moreso than more recent acts.

As well as Jazz Funk and Soul I liked Steely Dan and The Enid and anything a bit left of centre. I remember going to see a big band down mile end where the local communists would do shouty speaches at the break. Fucking brilliant.

Late 90s-early 00s :
UK garage Eminem Mainstream American hiphop/RnB Bit of nu-metal
Pretty much all everyone i knew listened to
Was a bit different back then cos there were still recognisable genres in chart music, most stuff nowadays is just a mish-mash trying to appeal to as many people as possible at once, imo. Makes it just sound bland. Don't get me wrong was a lot of absolutely awful shit back then as well though.

What is the truth about rock music? Music is a powerful, and perhaps The most powerful medium in the world, music Plato says When the music of a society changes The whole society will change Aristotle, a contemporary of Plato's, says When music changes there should be laws To govern the nature and the character of that music Lenin says The best and the quickest way to undermine any society is through its music Music, ladies and gentlemen, is the gift of God It was given by man to offer praises to God And to lift us up to Him, and to exalt Him And so even touch the tender recesses Of our heart and of our mind Satan has taken music and he has counterfeited it Convoluted it Twisted it Exploited it And now he's using to hammer, hammer, hammer, hammer... Hammer a message Into the minds and the lifestyle of this generation.
